Samantha Shankman: The Real ID Acts remain extremely controversial, ever since their initial proposal, years ago, to tighten restrictions, and are considered, by most, massive violations of privacy. DHS enforcement has declined to comment on why five have been singled out, but starting sometime in 2016 [the precise date has not been formally announced], residents of Louisiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, and Wisconsin, besides Samoa are warned that they will need to carry a proper source of identification to travel commercially, domestically or otherwise—a pretty major development since 1/3rd of Americans are not permitted to. "Acceptable" IDs include passports and passport cards, as well as resident cards, military ID, and DHS trusted traveler cards such as Global Entry and NEXUS. Standard Driver’s Licenses are no longer valid, to board flights (The TSA also accepts Enhanced Driver’s Licenses, the kind that ~ currently ~ substitute passports for travel to and from Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. Of the non-compliant States, only Minnesota and New York issue Enhanced Licenses. Children do not need ID, when flying with a guardian)
